Life Skills for Independent Living returns in Term 1!
This year, Life Skills for Independent Living is back in Term 1, now with an even stronger focus on planning and participating in local excursions. These experiences give learners hands-on opportunities to practice real-world life skills while building confidence in navigating community spaces and services.
Participants will also explore key areas such as:
Goal setting and planning
Exercise and nutrition
Basic cooking skills
Technology skills and cybersafety
Money handling and budgeting
Problem-solving and decision-making
Speaking up and building confidence
The course also features a range of guest speakers, offering real-world insights and inspiration.
But don’t just take our word for it. Our long-standing student, Leslie, who completed the course last year, shared how impactful it has been:
“My teacher, Mercedeh, created such a supportive and welcoming environment, especially at the start when joining a new class felt daunting. The course is as much about connection as learning — I enjoy staying active, being around people, and challenging myself in new ways. I enjoy chatting with people and learning new things.”
Leslie makes the weekly journey from Richmond to Olympic Neighbourhood House in Heidelberg West with his support worker to attend classes he genuinely looks forward to. Over time, he’s participated in a range of programs, including literacy and numeracy, and most recently, Life Skills for Independent Living. We’re excited to see him return this year as the course has been refreshed and revamped!
